PTFE medical tubing has become the cornerstone of modern pharmaceutical production lines. Where other materials leach plasticisers, swell in solvents, or fail autoclave sterilisation cycles, PTFE remains chemically inert, dimensionally stable, and extractables-free — across the full range of pharmaceutical production conditions.

Why PTFE Dominates Pharmaceutical Manufacturing

  • Chemical Resistance — withstands concentrated acids, bases, strong oxidisers, and all common pharmaceutical solvents without swelling, degradation, or leaching.
  • Temperature Stability — serviceable from –200°C to +260°C. Survives steam autoclave sterilisation at 134°C and dry heat sterilisation at 170°C.

Sterilisation Compatibility

PTFE withstands all standard pharmaceutical sterilisation methods. Steam autoclaving at 121°C or 134°C causes no dimensional change or chemical alteration. Dry heat sterilisation to 170°C is routinely used for thin-wall tubing. Gamma irradiation is generally not recommended for PTFE — it induces molecular chain scission and embrittlement at doses above ~10 kGy. For gamma-irradiated processes, specify FEP or PFA.

Expected Service Life

With correct installation and appropriate chemical and thermal loading, PTFE pharmaceutical tubing achieves a service life of 5–10 years in static installations. Peristaltic pump tubing life is shorter — typically 6–18 months depending on pump speed, tubing OD, and compression ratio. Plan replacement schedules based on visual inspection for compression set and bore distortion rather than fixed calendar intervals.
